Do doctors ever NOT diagnose someone with depression that thinks they are?
Q: I’m just curious. Can a doctor tell if someone is not really depressed when they say or think they are? Is this common for someone who is just lazy to go in to the doctor and try to get them to diagnose them with depression just so the person can get out of doing something like work? And do doctors commonly see right through this or do they just hand out depression diagnoses to anyone that wants it?
A: Depression, like pain is self reported. If you say you’re in pain, we believe you and treat. However, that said, there are many standardized tools for diagnosing depression that many offices use. These are questions filled out by the depressed person to see if they are depressed, then, they are also used to keep track of the person’s response to medical treatment. Standardized tests keep the diagnosis down to a minimum. Unless it as severe depression, they would not be able to get out of work. All in all, if someone is having signs and symptoms of depression, it is diagnosed and treated. There is no blood test for it. Sometimes, blood will be drawn because some medical problems can cause or worsen depression.
How does a doctor diagnose depression properly?
Q: How does a doctor really know when someone really is suffering from Depression? How can they tell if it;s depression, Clinical Depression, or just merely someone who is sad? Some people go to the doctor tell them all the classic symptons and are really just sad or upset, how do they know?
A: Some doctors ( usually psychiatrists) ask you to answer questions from a paper and rate how bad you feel on a scale of 1 to10. Others can usually tell from what you tell them. They ask questions and want to know how long you have felt a certain way. Some can just tell by the expressions on your face or the sound of your voice . Very good doctors can tell from listening to you talk if your voice sounds sad or depressed or even angry. I have been to all of them. I have had all their meds. I was finally diagnosed with PTSD. I have the best psychologist now I have ever been to. I don’t take any meds for depression, we just have talk therapy. I was misdiagnosed for many, many years but now I am better than I have been in 20 years. Finding the right doctor is the key to getting better.
