I have been invited to many wine tastings as well as food and wine pairings, but this is the first time I have ever attended a Wine and Watch Pairing dinner. The evening was very different.
First we met at Tag Heuer’s Swiss avante garde Watch Botique, inside Crystal’s Hotel, to sip champagne and view their extraordinary watch collections.
After we were dazled by the different designs, diamonds, golden accents and beauty of the watches, everyone strolled a few steps to Mastro’s Ocean Club Restaurant. The atmosphere was perfect as we entered our private banquet room with wall to wall windows.
How would you look at a Tag Heuer Watch and know which wine you would want to pair with the watch?
Lindsay Hymson, Tag Heuer’s Public Relations Manager, and Patrick Barrett, Mastro’s Wine Director/ Master Wine Sommelier, discussed the Watch and Wine pairings. Lindsay determined the specific aspects of each watch while Patrick found the wine that paired well with them. Lindsay wanted to engage people’s interest in more than just looking at the watch, to learn more about them and felt, “What is better than wine to help understand more of the watches’ aspects not just this is a pretty watch?”
Lindsay explained, “For example, Tag Heuer’s Formula I, men’s steel sport’s watches, have an orange color dial which is very visable, the dial is the first thing you see. It’s a fashion statement. Patrick paired the Formula I watch with a Sportswood Sauvignon Blanc Wine (’10, Napa, CA) that has orange notes which match the timepieces’ color. This wine has very bright citrus notes highlighted by wild sweet orange and apricot.
Tag Heuer’s Formula I ladies’ watches have sporty steel and chic, sophisticated ceramic. The ceramic exhibits class with it’s detailing and diamonds in the dial. Pairing the Formula I watch with the feminine Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars “Karia” Chardonnay Wine (’08, Napa, CA) shows subtety and finesse, thinking of the watch as being seductive and timeless. Karia is a little sweeter, with a feminine feeling.
Tag Heuer’s Carerra Heritage was named after the legendary 1950’s race across Mexico. They are vintage inspired with touches of rose gold colored details. Domaine Chandon Rose wine (NV/CA) was chosen for it’s rose/pink colors and colored label accented with gold colors. This is the counterpart of Moet & Chandon in Champaigne, France.
One of the honored watches, Tag Heuer’s Carerra 1887 Chronograph designed for their 150th anniversary with only 3,000 pieces made in a limited edition. It is an amazing piece with a lot of history. This prestigueous watch was paired with Inspire Cabernet Sauvignon (2007- Napa, CA), a hard to find special wine made on a limited basis of only 750 cases.
Tag Heuer’s Monaco Watch was designed with the first automatic chronograph and the first waterproof square case in a limited edition. The watches’ hands are blue with black straps. These watches are amazing, so detailed and very prestiguous. Pride Mountain Merlot (’08, Sonoma/Napa, CA) Wine’s blue-black color tinged with garnet is the first indication that the vintage is special. Black and red cherries, plum preserves and currant mingle with spice notes.”
The watches were luxurious and the wines were great! I loved the way the wines paired with the watches.

Our five course dinner began with family-style appetizers of shrimp cocktail and asparagus tempura. The jumbo shrimp were around 2-3 to a pound. I was hapily surprised that all of the shells were removed from the shrimp so it was easier to eat.
The options continued with a choice of Caesar salad, iceberg wedge or Boston clam chowder.
Then the entrees enticed us with Chilean sea bass, 12 ounce bone-in filet, 22 ounce bone-in ribeye, herb roasted chicken breast, swordfish or their featured fish. Thinking about Tag Heuer’s Watches while eating my steak, I felt fine steak could be added to the pairing.
For the finale, the desserts consisted of cheesecake, creme brulee or chocolate pudding cake. When I placed my fork into the chocolate pudding cake, I was surprised when the warm chocolate oozed around the cake.
Experiencing the Watch and Wine pairing with Tag Heuer’s stunning watches and the wonderful meal was a night to remember!
