Will We Have Another Earthquake?

Aftershocks Makes Us Wonder – Will There Be Another Big One??

I don’t know about you but I’m wondering every time I leave the house, is it safe to go…the 5.8 earthquake in Virginia has put some fears in my bones? Some of my friends suffered some minor damages to their homes…we’ve all agreed we don’t feel safe from earthquakes like we once did. If anyone had told me the day before we were going to have a quake, I must admit, I would have laughed at them.

After we’ve suffered through a natural disaster, there’ve been numerous shakings again. They were definitely not as prevalent as the first one, but they’ve been happening. Between 5:09 a.m. Saturday and 12:19 a.m. Monday morning, the U. S. Geological Survey recorded five aftershocks near the epicenter of last week’s magnitude 5.8 quake, two of them within a minute of each other, and I do believe, I heard them say on the local news this afternoon that we’ve suffered a 2.1 magnitude today, 30 August 2011.

People reported feeling 5 aftershocks with small magnitudes rumble in Northern Virginia between 4:18 p.m. Sunday and 12:19 Monday. This weekend’s shocks occurred at 5:02 a.m. Saturday with a magnitude 2.0; Sunday at 9:06 p.m. with a magnitude 2.3; Sunday at 11:15 p.m. with a magnitude 2.0; Sunday at 11:16 with a magnitude 2.7; and Monday at 12:19 a.m. with a magnitude 2.2., and the one today with a magnitude of 2.1.

The state has suffered at least 20 aftershocks since Tuesday’s, 23 August 2011, 5.8 original quake. The largest aftershock so far had a magnitude of 4.5. People, don’t be alarmed, the USGS has indicated aftershocks are common and they should lessen within the next few weeks.
