Will 2012 Be Any Different; Or Are More Remakes on the Horizon?

2011 was the year of the remake, will 2012 be any different? Films from the seventies, eighties, and nineties received the special remake treatment. Some of these films were great, some mediocre, and a few were better than the original. Will there actually be any new movies worth watching in 2012? Let’s take a look at some of the movies that are planned for release in 2012, to get an idea of what to expect in the new year.

In January of 2012, Roadie brings us the tale of a roadie from a defunct eighties hair band that goes home to live with his mother. Yes, another eighties film, perhaps with flashbacks to the eighties, that is technically set in the present day, but that uses the eighties as the catlyst to advance a new plot. Doesn’t sound very interesting at all.

Good Deeds comes out in February. This is being hailed in the media as the first non-Madea Tyler Perry film to hit theatres in a while, perhaps the first since The Family That Preys (2008). If history is any indication, Tyler Perry’s films that are not based around the character of Madea do not perform very well, so there will be a few apologists like myself that love the film, but audiences will not support the film. Expect to see mixed reviews of this film as early as next month if there are advanced screenings of this film. Personally, if the film is as good as The Family That Preys, or even as good as the first Why Did I Get Married (2007), (which is not saying much), it will have been a success. Tyler Perry has a lot of lost potential as a filmmaker, but his films are profitable, and he is the highest paid man in the industry, so he is doing something right.

21 Jump Street is coming out in March. While the television show was great, bringing this to the big screen is questionable. In the worst case scenario, this could be a repeat of the dismal failure of Starsky and Hutch (2004). Bringing this television show back to the small screen may be a more plausible scenario, and the success of the reboot of the Beverly Hills 90210 franchise could be duplicated. In any event it will be interesting to see what happens.

Dorothy of Oz is slated for release in April. This might be a good film for one of a few reasons. Disney does not have anything to do with this release, and it is actually based on the book of the same name. What this means, is that a successful reboot of the storyline established in Return to Oz (1985) could be on the horizon. Return to Oz was a failure, but it did earn good reviews from the critics. Perhaps Dorothy of Oz, will be more accessible than Return to Oz was.

The Three Stooges is also set for release in April. There isn’t much to say about this film, and there probably will not be much that you can say about in April. At least it is not another eighties film.

Dark Shadows comes to the big screen in May. This is a long overdue big screen treatment of a hit soap opera from ABC that was popular back in the sixties.

The Amazing Spider Man promises to be reboot of the Saturday morning TV show that aired back in the eighties. Whether or not anyone wants to see a reboot of the animated franchise, remains to be seen. July will also bring us a continuation of the Dark Knight franchise, in The Dark Knight Rises. Christian Bale will be unjustifiably compared to Heath Ledger, which will be its own entertainment, regardless of whether or not you decide to watch this film.

The Marriage Counselor is also slated for release in July. The only promising attribute of this film, is that Kim Kardashian is rumored to be in it. Outside of that little tidbit, it looks like it could be a strange reboot of Tyler Perry’s ongoing marriage themed franchise that he established back in 2007 with Why Did I Get Married, just with a different film. Expect to see this franchise play alongside the Madea franchise, as Tyler Perry struggles with exactly where he should go on the big screen. Somehow, I think his success on the small screen will eclipse whatever he has to offer on the big screen in 2012.

In November, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn part 2, will finally put this franchise out of its misery. The real fun begins, when the writer of this franchise attempts to put out another book; this movie is just a little teaser. Whether or not Stephanie Meyer is a one franchise wonder, will be the real story of 2013.

Finally, The Great Gatsby will relive the original F. Scott Fitzgerald novel.
