Where to Eat an Authentic American Thanksgiving Meal in Berlin, Germany

Thanksgiving Day is a uniquely American tradition. Although Germans enjoy a harvest celebration – known as Erntedankfest — it pales in comparison to the ample fare presented on a typical American turkey day. Still, American expatriates and tourists in Berlin need not fret; there are plenty of venues that allow for the enjoyment of a traditional meal with all – or at least most – of the fixings.

Leroy’s Joy: Nov. 24

Visit Leroy’s for a traditional turkey feast on Nov. 24. Reservations are required to ensure that there are plenty of servings of the sometimes elusive turkey. While Germans delight in devouring geese over the course of the winter holidays, turkeys are a bit harder to come by. Other menu items feature rabbit and duck, all cooked and served against the backdrop of Californian and Mexican influences. Expats delight in enchiladas and burritos, which are not that easy to find in Berlin. Décor bespeaks influences solidly rooted in Americana.

Hard Rock Cafe: Nov. 24

The Hard Rock is ubiquitous and as American as apple pie. True to form, it caters to an American clientele – or Germans who delight in all things stars and stripes. All day on Nov. 24, the venue serves up a traditional turkey day dinner that includes stuffing, potatoes, cranberry sauce, veggies and pie. It is a good idea to call in and reserve a space for the reasons aforementioned.

The American Church in Berlin: Nov. 26

Church services are held in English and the faith community maintains an ecumenical flavor. Catering to expatriates, tourists, military personnel and English-speaking visitors, it offers its ninth annual family-style Thanksgiving meal and a companionable evening of music. Enjoy gospel sounds, jazz tunes and other musical interludes. Pay €25 for a seat at the table. Reserve your seat by Nov. 20 to ensure guaranteed admission. This is a great opportunity for the American new to town, who is hoping to make some friends and perhaps also find a church home.

Midtown Grill: Nov. 10 to Dec. 23

Swanky and reminiscent of New York, this eatery delights in serving up a mean Bloody Mary, homemade breads and steaks so well-prepared that they melt in your mouth. Starting on Nov. 10 and going all the way to December 23, enjoy turkey with mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes and pumpkin pie. To feed four to six people, plan on spending €129,00 – which does not include libations. If you prefer to pick up a full Thanksgiving meal to serve at home, call two business days ahead of the planned dinner and pay €115,00.
