Understanding Anivia in League of Legends

The Cryophoenix, Anivia, furiously enters the battlefield in a hailstorm of icy death. An ability caster ranged mage, Anivia brings slowing control to the team fight while allowing for high damage output. Building high amounts of mana to take advantage of Anivia’s abilities will allow for constant battlefield dominance.

ABILTIES

Rebirth, the innate ability of Anivia traces its roots to the mythological phoenix. Perhaps the greatest early laning ability, Rebirth allows for Anivia to die and revert to the form of an egg. While in egg form, armor and resistances are modified, allowing for Anivia’s eventual rebirth at a percentage of her health based on the egg form’s total health.

A violent ice shard similar to what Lu Kang used against Sub Zero, Flash Frost, sends a massive ice bolt towards the enemy champion. Upon impact, it slows the opponent and explodes into an area of effect ability damaging nearby enemies. This is a skillshot ability, that inflicts the “chilled” debuff upon the opponents.

Crystallize, Anivia’s great control ability allows for the creation of an expansive wall of ice. This allows for Anivia to block the retreat, or gank, of an opposing character. Used in tandem with flash, Anivia can easily escape most opponents with ease. This can also be used to shunt opponents away from a group fight, or blocking new aggressors from entering the fray.

Synergy is found among Anivia’s abilities with the use of Frostbite. This ability damages opponents with an amazing ability power ratio. For the enemy champions who are “chilled” the damage is doubled and will allow for great mana efficiency.

Glacial Storm, Anivia’s ultimate, is a toggle ability that allows for continuous control of a large area in the battlefield. Not only does the ability slow the opponent, it also adds the “chill” debuff, deals massive damage, and can be used for as long as Anivia has the mana to support it. A great ability for group fights, retreat, and for general disruption; Glacial Storm allows for many options for its usage.

SUMMONER SPELLS, MASTERIES AND RUNES

Summoner spells can vary according to individual preference, but Clarity and Flash come to mind. Anivia’s lack of wall hopping abilities allows Flash to be used as an effective escape ability. Flashing over Crystallize is also a past time for advanced Anivia players. Clarity will allow for Glacial Storm to survive for a few more seconds, and allow for early game dominance.

Utility of offensive masteries allow for Anivia to best use her abilities. Mana regeneration or greater damage output allow Anivia to dominate the battlefield. Defensive masteries are not generally used due to Anivia’s offensive and crowd controlling nature.
