Underemployed? Hate Your Job? Now What?

In life you will meet two types of people, those who will complain, feel sad about how bad their life is but never do anything about it and those who may also crib, but they vow to change what they dislike about their present circumstances. The difference is that they decide to make a choice and to act.

I believe most of the times we do have a choice and, yes, even though we can’t control what happens to us in life, we can choose how to react and respond.

We still live in a world where the job dissatisfaction rates are high. The results of a new Conference Board study show 55 percent of Americans are dissatisfied with their work, which was the lowest level ever recorded in more than 22 years of studying the issue.

In today’s times, when the unemployment is high and it’s considered a blessing just to have some job, it’s easy to get in the mindset of settling and taking whatever comes. And it’s true that for bills to be paid, we have to do our best and work with what is available. But staying in positions that do not use your depth of experience and honor your dreams sooner or later starts creating low morale and de-motivation, eventually impacting your quality of life.

So if you find yourself stuck in the wrong job or in a position that doesn’t inspire you, here are some suggestions to help you.

Stop complaining and start spending time in figuring out what you really want to do – A negative mindset doesn’t allow a lot of room for imagination and creativity. To start thinking of ideas and exploring your passions, you must start coming from a place of possibilities.

Focus on the other eight hours – I came across Robert Pagliarini’s book – The other 8 hours: Maximize your free time to create wealth and purpose. In this book he states a simple concept that sometimes we don’t realize – In a day we are asleep for eight hours, we work for eight hours and then there are the other eight hours. Use that for finding and pursuing what you love to do. That will inspire you and bring back that passion and excitement that you may have lost stuck in a boring position or career.

Look for your dream work instead of a job – When you think of your career in terms of a job, that makes it a bit limiting, but when you think of it in terms of work, then that is a bit more expansive.

Look for a new job – Once you have identified your ideal work, look at what career and job options are available for you. Keep looking so you are not wasting your precious time in life doing something that doesn’t bring value to you. Make your switch as the appropriate opportunity presents itself.

However you approach your work situation, remember that it’s important to make a choice and take some action and keep working toward your goals and dreams. This will make you feel empowered and help you stay out of the victim mode. If you are passionate about leading an improved life or creating a better quality of life, pursuing work that you enjoy should be important to you.
