Top 3 Reasons to Skip the DJ at Your Wedding

You’re finally planning your big day, and you want it to be perfect. Although it is a very exciting time, it can also be incredibly stressful. By the time you’ve purchased the dress, photographer, location, food, and flowers, you may have bypassed one crucial part of the process…your reception music! There are a few options to consider here: A DJ, a live band, or providing your own musical selection. Many people opt to hire a DJ, but if you’re debating whether or not this is a good idea, here are a few reasons that show how providing your own music may be the best option.

1. Cost

DJs can be costly. The price can range anywhere from $400 to $1000 for a wedding, and the cost of a live band is significantly higher. Your wedding budget can easily be blown before you have even thought about music. Plus, you may want to save extra money for the honeymoon (the best part in my opinion) which can also be a costly expense if you have to foot the bill.

2. DJs can be obnoxious

We’ve all been to weddings where the sound of the DJ’s voice causes us to cringe. You either find yourself out on the dance floor playing some ridiculous game, or you’re struggling to hear a great conversation with a friend over the grating voice of the “entertainment.” And do we even need to mention the dreaded chicken dance? While DJs typically announce the wedding party, the cake cutting, and the toasts, a family member or friend can also perform these tasks for you.

3. Creating a playlist is easy

Thankfully, recent developments in technology have afforded everyone the ability to download songs to a computer or mp3 player with ease. Many common reception sites are already equipped with a PA system, so you only need to provide the device the playlist is on. And while purchasing individual songs on the internet can be time consuming, it is far less costly than hiring a DJ. Just make sure that when you are choosing songs for your playlist, they are family friendly. After all, you wouldn’t want Grandma to faint during your favorite Dr. Dre song now would you?
