Three Off-Beat U.S. Destinations for a Romantic Proposal

With the end of the year coming soon, that means Valentine’s Day is just around the corner. Whether you’re considering a special proposal on February 14, or a romantic proposal any day of the year, here are three of the most romantic travel destinations in the U.S. to make that moment one she’ll never forget.

Big Sur, California

Big Sur is a small town that sits on the coast of central California, one of the most spectacular regions in the world. This area has inspired many writers, artists and poets, and it’s also known for inspiring romance, making it an the ideal spot to pop the question.

Deep gorges cut through rugged mountains and pine forests extend to the edge of sandy beaches, while waterfalls spill from towering cliffs. Big Sur is also home to one of the most unique beaches, Pfeiffer State Beach. Here you’ll find one of the few purple sand beaches in the world. The purple color comes from manganese garnet deposits found in the surrounding rocks, and with the turquoise waves crashing on the shoreline, the contrast is a sight to behold.

Take the short, .64 mile trail to an 80 foot waterfall that splashes down on the sand below. It just doesn’t get more romantic than this.

Put this scenery together with a stay at the beautiful Lucia Lodge, and you can’t go wrong. Lucia offers stunning views of the Pacific Ocean and the rugged cliffs of the coastline. Their honeymoon cottage would be perfect for any couple celebrating a momentous occasion.

Waterfalls of Havasupai

Havasupai is world renowned for having some of the most incredible scenery, including the magical Havasu Falls. The area is in a remote location of the Grand Canyon, and is part of the Havasupai Native Reservation, one of the most beautiful destinations on earth.

Here you’ll find towering waterfalls of crystal clear blue-green water with travertine swimming holes awaiting at the bottom. This is a truly spiritual place and would be an ultimate destination for a marriage proposal. The only catch is that you’ll have to make a ten mile trek in to the falls, but it’s a fairly easy and not too rugged journey. This destination would be ideal for partners who love to hike together.

Accommodations on the reservation include basic hotel type lodging, or camping. For outdoor lovers, this is truly romantic. Make it extra special by packing a bottle of champagne.

Cedar Creek Treehouse

Have you ever wanted to sleep in a real treehouse? Near Mount Rainier in Washington state, you can do just that. A cabin sitting atop a giant cedar tree offers amazing views and the peaceful sounds of a mountain stream. Bald Eagles and even Great Blue Heron are often seen soaring through the skies.

The tree trunk goes straight up through the luxurious two-story cabin, that is also eco-friendly, and even “off-the-grid,” using a small solar powered system. The fourth floor of the stairwell is a glass-enclosed observation area, and would be an ideal place to propose while watching the stars, or the birds go by.

The cabin comes with all the usual amenities to keep you nice and cozy, and you’ll find swimming and fishing, along with miles of spectacular hiking trails right at your door.
