The Perfect Wedding-Related Romantic Comedies

There is almost nothing more dramatic than a wedding. You mix two completely different families and a wide range of emotions with the bride’s estrogen and the groom’s testosterone. The result is usually drama, drama, and more drama. The wedding movie subset of the romantic comedy genre is especially hilarious. If you or someone you know is getting hitched, why not have a wedding flick movie night?

Invite over a group of buddies to watch the best and worst in wedding film fare. The viewing party can be a girls night in or a co-ed movie night. Pop up the buttered corn, strike up the bridal playlist, and let hilarity ensue. And what are the wedding movies you should see? We managed to hone down the list. Ready … Set … Watch!

“The Wedding Planner”

Jennifer Lopez stars in “The Wedding Planner” as a woman who makes everyone else’s romantic dreams come true while being completely unlucky in love. Matthew McConaughey plays the groom of a demanding bride-to-be and J-Lo’s love interest. Lopez manages to be sweet and endearing in this movie. The 2001 film was slightly controversial at the time as it featured the Latina star playing an Italian woman. The film was a blockbuster hit, debuting at number one, making Lopez the first actress to have a number-one album simultaneously with a number-one movie.

“My Best Friend’s Wedding”

Julia Roberts is at her best in the 1997 romantic comedy “My Best Friend’s Wedding.” Dermot Mulroney plays the love interest and titular best friend. His announcement that he’s getting married breaks their pact that they would get hitched at 28 if neither of them had found a partner.

When the vapid fiance played by the hilarious Cameron Diaz asks Roberts’ character to be her maid-of-honor, the stage is set for lunacy. Of course, Roberts’ Julianne realizes that she is madly in love with Dermot’s Michael. Egged on by gay friend George (aptly played by Rupert Everett), the bold beauty goes all out to get her man. Roberts also takes on the wedding flick in 1999’s “Runaway Bride.”

“Bride Wars”

“Bride Wars” stars Anne Hathaway and Kate Hudson as bestie brides who accidentally both book their wedding at the Plaza Hotel for the same day. This 2009 female buddy flick was directed by Gary Winick. The 26-year-old bridezillas get into a brutal wedding competition to not only outdo each other but rip each other down. Wedding sabotage includes hair dyeing and tanning mishaps, bachelorette party hijinks and all around fun. In this flick the meet-cute and love affair is really between BFFs who must find their way back to each other.

“27 Dresses”

No romantic comedy list would be complete without a flick from Katherine Heigl. In “27 Dresses” she is the living embodiment of the saying “Always a bridesmaid, never a bride.” The 2008 film was capably directed by Anne Fletcher. The film opens with Heigl’s character running back and forth as a bridesmaid in two very different ethnic weddings.

Even through the differences we see how much all weddings are exactly the same. James Marsden is the gorgeous object of her disgust and then affection. When the wedding-obsessed meets the wedding-cynical, there is extreme tension which of course leads to extreme humor.

Wedding movies will always be a staple. Other films you can add to a bachelorette weekend include “The Wood,” “The Wedding Singer,” “The Best Man,” and of course “My Big Fat Greek Wedding.” If you disagree, we recommend that you speak now or forever hold your remote. Happy viewing!
