The NES: King of Video Game Consoles

With so many options, what could possibly be my favorite video game console of all time? Could it be a current system with flashy graphics? Not a chance. My favorite video game console of all time is the Nintendo Entertainment System. The NES is an 8-bit video game system introduced in1985 by Nintendo of America. The NES revolutionized video gaming at the time by improving graphics and bringing popular games to the blockbuster status of popular movies. Now let’s take a look at why the NES is my favorite.

The Games

Nintendo had many legendary games and characters on the NES. First and foremost you had the Super Mario Bros. series featuring Mario, which made the NES the powerhouse it was. Then you had The Legend of Zelda series featuring Link, which quickly became a best seller. Let’s also not forget Mega Man, Castlevania, or Metroid games, all legendary in their own right. Besides that, you had pop culture icons of the time like the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Bart Simpson featured in their own games. Needless to say, the NES’ huge selection and popular characters made it a must have.

The Accessories

Who doesn’t like an awesome accessory to make video gaming more fun? Thankfully, the NES had plenty of accessories to choose from. The classic, original accessory was the Zapper Light Gun. This was essential for shooting games like Duck Hunt. Next you had controllers like the NES Advantage that had features like turbo buttons. You also had then revolutionary controllers like the Power Glove and Power Pad. In my opinion though, no accessory compared to the Game Genie. The Game Genie let you put in cheat codes for things like extra lives and even let you change the colors of the games. NES accessories definitely helped it earn legendary status.

The Magazine

Nintendo Power. No gamer was complete without it. I remember checking my mailbox every day for the first issue that also came with the game Dragon Warrior. It was so exciting to read about my favorite games and new games that were coming out. You could also get cheat codes and see all time high scores for your favorite games. The fun part for me was getting all the stickers to put on my controllers. It made it seem more personal and cool for a kid to have stickers on their controllers. Simply put, Nintendo Power made the NES complete. Having info on current and future games, along with things like stickers to personalize your system, made the NES the total package for gamers.

As a gamer, I definitely like the crazy systems of today. However, there was something magical during the NES era that made video games something we all had to have. The NES was the first system to truly make a new game release a special event. In the end, video games were something to do in your spare time and the NES made video games a part of life.
