The Mystic Archives of Dantalian Episode Eight “Book of Equivalence/Book of Relationship”–Recap

The episode opens with Camilla showing up at the door wearing men’s clothes, a top hat, and a fake mustache. Huey is understandably startled by her appearance, and then we go to the opening credits. When we get back from the opening credits, Camilla is saying hello to Dalian. Dalian as usual, doesn’t not approve of Camilla’s outfit. Camilla teases Dalian, and gives her a present.

They have tea, and Camilla notices that Dalian is reading an old auction catalog. After some conversation, it turns out that Dalian is extremely fond of one of the bears that had been part of the auction. (She claims she only likes the toys presented for their aesthetic and market value, but she is lying.) Out of the blue, Camilla asks for something out Huey’s pocket. This turns out to be a paperclip. Camilla takes the paperclip and heads off, much to the bemusement of Huey.

The next scene is Huey and Dalian talking with a bookshop owner. The bookshop owner wants Huey and Dalian to assess a book he believes to be a Phantom Book. Unfortunately, when he goes to get the book, he discovers that he has already accidentally sold it. Huey enquires if the shop owner remembers whom he sold it to. It turns out that this book was sold to Camilla. Dalian asks the name of the book, which is “The Book of Equivalence.” This appears to upset Dalian.

The Book of Equivalence enables the reader of the book to obtain objects of equal value through trade. What you end up doing is trading various objects until you come to the desired object. Of course, the value of an object is entirely relative, so Camilla’s first trade is the paperclip for her butler’s pocket watch. (Which he doesn’t need since he recently got a new one.) Dalian is still upset about Camilla having the book and explains when questioned that if the trade involves something someone is willing to die for, then Camilla might be in very great danger because the trade must be things of equivalent worth.

Dalian and Huey track Camilla down via her various trades. Some of which are completely nonsensical and kind of entertaining. (I would have liked to see the actual transactions instead of just the aftermath since the sequence involves a pen, a cat, and a cart of oranges.) Then they come to the mansion of a Mr. Fearon, a collector. We switch to Camilla, who is talking to Mr. Fearon, who has the bear that Dalian liked. Mr. Fearon claims that the collection is priceless to him. Then we switch again to Dalian and Huey, who have driven up to the mansion. They run up to the door, only to find Camilla coming out with the bear. The final trade Camilla made was the Book of Equivalence for the bear.

In the next scene, Camilla is continuing her visit when Armand turns up, begging Huey for help. He has a very severe problem that seems to involve growing tree branches out of his arm that spontaneously burst into flame. (He also has tree branches growing out of his chest.) The scene cuts to a very angry young woman in a carriage, holding a book. She seems to be very angry with someone. Then the scene shifts back to Armand, who is explaining to Huey that he has a girlfriend whom he met via a Phantom Book. The Book of Relationship will guide the reader to his or her soul mate. (The book comes in two parts that are drawn together.)

The catch with this book is that it seems to take betrayal very seriously. (In other words, if the one of the two people brought together feels as if they have been betrayed by the other, something horrible happens to the unfaithful person. The book does not care if the other person is actually guilty, it only cares that the other person feels wronged.) Armand’s girlfriend Lianna Scholes has a sweet exterior that conceals a very jealous mentally unstable interior. When she sees Armand assisting a young woman who tripped, she decides that Armand is unfaithful. After several more instances of Armand being friendly to women, she invokes the curse aspect of the book.

As Armand finishes the story, the doorbell rings. It’s Armand’s girlfriend. (Camilla and Dalian immediately run for cover.) Armand begs Huey for help, but Huey appears to be at a loss. The scene shifts to Armand’s girlfriend, whom Huey lets into the parlor. Lianna sees Dalian and Camilla. She is extremely upset by this further evidence of betrayal.

Armand tries to explain himself and asks Huey for help again. Huey asks Dalian what they should do and she says that Armand should die. Huey regretfully informs Armand that there is nothing he can do, and Lianna burns Armand to a crisp. After the deed is done, she hands over her half of the Book of Relationship and walks out. Of course, once Lianna is gone, Huey uses another Phantom Book to bring Armand back to life. The episode ends with Armand not having learned very much about not judging people by appearances.

The next episode seems to take place in another world entirely.
