The Muppets Take ‘SNL’ by Storm

With their upcoming feature film, “The Muppets” are red hot again, and it came as no surprise they showed up on “Saturday Night Live” this past weekend for Jason Segel’s hosting monologue. But rather than stop there, the most iconic puppets on the planet stole the show on the “SNL” broadcast as well, despite Segel’s attempt to assert the upper hand in the monologue.

Segel hit the stage solo, but when he sat down to the piano to do a song, Kermit and Miss Piggy popped up beside him, followed shortly by the rest of the star Muppets. As he sang the “But I can’t believe I’m hosting ‘SNL’” chorus, the Muppets echoed back with “Yes it’s great that we’re all hosting SNL. As a group we’re all hosting SNL,” till Segel finally stepped in and corrected them — only he was hosting, drawing the ire of Miss Piggy. To which Kermit replied, “It makes perfect sense they would pick Jason, Piggy. I mean, when people go to a see a Muppet movie, they say ‘Gee, I can’t wait to see the human.’”

The song finished with the Muppets, enthusiasm squashed, agreeing that they couldn’t believe Segel was hosting “SNL” either. Continuing the debate, Segel argued for why he was chosen as the host, dropping the bombshell that Kermit and company weren’t even wearing any pants — we’re bound to see that splashed all over the tabloids any day now. Kermit countered with his Ray Romano impression, which didn’t argue his case so well, but the Muppets gang pointed out that they have been a part of “SNL” since 1975, showing a photo of a Muppet with the late Gilda Radner.

Segel apologized and asked for their support. After a little reluctance, an invite to the after party smoothed over the tension for a happy ending. And we always have to have a happy ending in Muppetland.

For the “SNL” newscast, Seth Meyers introduced a new segment for the night: “Really? With Seth and Kermit.” Discussing the recent classification of school cafeteria pizza as a vegetable, Kermit was on hand to chime in with “Really?” throughout Meyers’s commentary and a few extra zingers.

“Maybe we should just change the National Anthem to the Hot Pockets jingle … I mean, really?” The lovable green icon also reminded us how doggone cute they are when he rubbed his little tummy as Meyers discussed childhood obesity. But the biggest “Really?” of the segment came from Meyers when Kermit clarified the difference between puppets and Muppets — “Well, a puppet is actually controlled by a person, whereas I am an actual talking frog.”

Glad we got that straight.

Keep your eyes peeled for more Muppet appearances this week on the talk show circuit, as “The Muppets” movie premieres this Thanksgiving.
