The Monkees Heartthrob Davy Jones Dead at 66

First the world lost Whitney Houston just weeks ago, now Davy Jones of The Monkees has died of a heart attack on Wednesday. He was 66.

The British-born singer formed the TV super group The Monkees in 1966 with Mickey Dolenz, Michael Nesmith and Peter Tork. He then went on to have a successful solo career. Some of his biggest hits include The Monkees’ “Daydream Believer,” “Last Train to Clarksville” and “(I’m Not Your) Stepping Stone.” According to CNN the popstar complained about breathing difficulty before being rushed to the hospital. He was pronounced dead at Martin Hospital South Wednesday morning.

At the time of this writing, Tork is the only former band member to reflect on the news. He posted on Facebook, “It is with great sadness that I reflect on the sudden passing of my long-time friend and fellow-adventurer, David Jones. His talent will be much missed; his gifts will be with us always. My deepest sympathy to Jessica and the rest of his family. Adios, to the Manchester Cowboy.” Tork was one of Jones’ closest friends.

Many critics felt that The Monkees were an American Beatles rip-off thanks to their highly popular TV show. Over their career they sold millions of albums both during their original run and revitalization on MTV in the 80s. The group disbanded due to inner turmoil, but Jones continue to tour the world performing Monkees classics.

Up until his death Jones was still considered a heart throb with his signature pelvic dances and swoon-worthy songs. His last performance was Feb. 19 in Oklahoma and he was expected to appear April 14 with former heartthrob David Cassidy.

Prior to Monkees fame, Jones was a regular on Manchester’s soap opera, “Coronation Street.” He played Ena Sharples’ grandson before taking an interesting in theater.

Helen Kensick told Fox News that she did not have details on his passing. She said, “The only thing we can do is confirm that he has died of a heart attack at Indiantown, Florida, this morning. We will have more later.”

Jones is survived by his wife Jessica and four daughters from past relationships.
