The Ministry of Warriors: Episode 26

“Nelson,” Mrs. Warren began slowly, letting each word grind into his ears. “You’d better know what you’re doing. Because if this goes bad if this goes bad, I will personally hold you responsible,”

Nelson smiled. “Understood, Mrs. Warren. But I’ve got a feeling this is going to be more interesting than you’re –“

Another buzz in Nelson’s ear interrupted him.

“Yes?” Nelson said. “Ah, the others are here. Thank you. Send them in, please.”

Both Slater and Kenneth Lee walked through the doors of the gym almost completely overwhelmed by its splendor and sophistication. Kenneth, carrying a cane and walking with a slight gimp in his leg, wore a plain white shirt with gray pants and suspenders. Slater wore his usual outfit, except around his right arm was an extremely crude-looking device, an ugly, dripping mass of rusting metal crawling up to his elbow with a large barrel protruding from the top of it.

“What is that…that disgusting looking thing around his arm?!” Ms. Dawes was completely horrified.

“Looks like some type of…arm cannon,” Mr. Taylor said with a curious smile.

“A very primitive arm cannon,” Mr. James said sternly.

“Well it’s horrible looking!” Ms. Dawes replied. “I hope he doesn’t expect to win with that thing.”

It was, in fact, a gas-powered arm cannon that Slater had been working on, made from refurbished computer parts and old automobile gears. The cannon was armed with about ten million rounds of extra tiny balls of plastic using an automatic propulsion system Slater made with toy engines connected to tiny magnets.

Contrary to his nature, his grandfather knew, Slater was very capable in fields of science and electronics. But attempts at advancing himself were stifled by the skeptical teachers at East Central, who were unable see beyond his trouble-making antics, accusing him of cheating off the so-called “honor students” when he turned in an A+ project.

Instead, Slater expressed himself at the scrap yard on Gray Street not too far from his home, spending hour after endless hour digging through the rubbish and using it to create a variety of machines that, while functional and extremely creative, didn’t look very appealing.

“You did well, Slater,” Kenneth said.

Slater Lee’s attention, however, was diverted toward the stunning young lady about six feet away from the entrance. She was bent over holding a bottle steady as the child inside the stroller drank his milk.

“Ohhh, I like that!” Slater yelled out. He could see the shapely outline of her butt through her long coat.

“Slater, stay focused,” Kenneth said, grabbing his grandson by the arm. Slater hadn’t even realized that he had taken three steps toward her.

In the observation room, Principal Nelson walked over to the microphone and clicked it on.

“Good afternoon,” Nelson began, the sound system filling the gymnasium with his voice. “My name is Principal Nelson. On behalf of myself and the executive board, I would like to welcome our guests, Slater and Kenneth Lee, to the Foxxburgh-Wellington Academy of Gifted Combatants. Today we host a team exhibition match to measure Slater’s potential for acceptance into this school. Your opponents will be Cammy Thatch and Daniel Wellington III, two of our top students. Slater, I would like you to meet your partner for this afternoon: Elena Miguelas.”
