The Death of Robert G Wright

The Death of Robert G Wright

It was a little past 8 PM when a call was made by his wife to Sonya their daughter-in-law, “we been trying to call home for the last half-hour and Bob is not answering his cell phone can you please check on him for me”. She traveled the short distance to the house and upon entering a strange odor greeted her, it was like something was burnt or set on fire. The scene that she found was not pleasant, a body laying face down in a pool of blood. Sonya in training to become an EMT checked for a pulse and found none. The police were called; the place Bob called home and the area around it became a crime scene. The entrances way into the house were for the most part kept unlocked, because the area was mostly with out crime. So there was no force entry, and the body was found in front of a television with the volume turned quite loud due his Tinnitus that was caused by the war he served in many years prior. More than likely he never heard the assassin that somehow sneaked up behind him to deliver the fatal blow. The neighbors were question about any thing out of the ordinary, and the only thing mention was a motor bike was seen leaving the driveway just after nightfall no description could be told due to helmet the person was wearing. .

A weapon, a pistol was found, a 38 caliber at the rear of the house in the grass just off the paved driveway, it was more than like dropped in the darkness due to a hasty exit from the crime scene. The pistol was dusted for fingerprints; prints were found and recorded. The pistol had tool marks half way down the barrel. The serial number was recorded and compared to records that were kept in the state’s database, the weapon was reported stolen six months prior. The doorknobs and the objects inside were also dusted and these prints were recorded. The coroners placed the time of death at 7 PM give or take a half an hour.

At first the wife was a prime suspect because of a quarter million dollar life insurance policy that was purchase a year before. She and their son were question, they stated that they left around noon for Cape Girardeau to do some shopping, and catch a movie at the theater. Quick check of the cell phone records seemed to confirm that, a couple of times during the day she called the son or the son called her. When question she stated that a couple of times due to their different interest in shopping they became separated form each other and used their cell phone to locate the other. At that point she just became a point on interest.

The fingerprints that were collected were analyzed; the fingerprints on the 38 cal didn’t match anyone in the family or in the state’s database. The fingerprints that were found inside the house were only from family members and no others. Ballistic test was performed on the pistol and the bullet found in Bob was a perfect match. A week later a motor bike was found at a rest area that was located between Perryville and Cape Girardeau. The plaster cast made of the tires were a perfect match for the tire tracks found at the crime scene. There was no fingerprint to be founded on the bike, maybe because it sat in the weather for a week or maybe wiped clean.

The police had the weapon, the vehicle used for a getaway and fingerprints that didn’t match any one in the files. The person of interest, his wife had what seemed like a perfect alibi. Her and her son spent the day in cape; she produced a receipt from Pop eyes where they ate. The time was 5 PM, a couple of receipts from the various stores in the mall placed them their between 12 noon and 4 PM. Ticket stubs placed them at the Movie Theater a little before 7 PM. A check of the cell phone records confirmed that they called each other five times that day at various times and the calls were off of a cell phone tower in Cape. It seemed the case would go unsolved and be placed in the cold case files.

His wife sold all their property in Perryville and moved back to New Orleans with her youngest son, a cold case department carefully kept track of her checking account to see if any large sums of money was withdrawn that would possible be a pay off for a contract killing. No withdrawals were made, after a few years it was no longer pursued.

It was the following year, when a man was arrested for domestic disturbance; he was fingerprinted and placed in a cell. When the fingerprints were placed in the database they were found to be a perfect match for the murder that happen a year prior. The murder of Robert G Wright, the man was charge and question to great lengths. He swore that the time of the crime he was in the state of Mississippi visiting family and friends. It seemed plausible except his fingerprints would prove his statement to be false. His friends and family in Mississippi could not produce any evidence that would re-enforce his innocents. He was convicted and given a term of life in prison, a lifetime to declare his innocents that would only fall upon deaf ears. The case was solved and the file was placed in a database as completed.

It would never be known what really happen on that fateful day that Bob’s life came to an end. The motor bike that was used as a get away vehicle was found along side of hwy 55. His wife and son placed it in the back of the truck that they were driving. The motor bike was hidden in the down stairs apartment where his youngest son lived, it was where Bob never visited nor was he welcomed. The weapon was purchased out of a trunk of a car in a rest area many months prior, from a salesman of stolen property. The 38 cal was careful cleaned and placed inside of a zip lock bag. A month prior a yard sales was held and the weapon was place on a table. The man in prison accused of murder, inspected the weapon and studied it with great interest, when requested a price he was a quoted a price that was outlandish and way beyond his means. He returned the weapon to the table, a pencil inserted into the barrel was use to place it into a zip lock bag. In Cape Girardeau his wife carried both cell phones in her pocket book and the ringers were placed on silence. Every few hours she found the privacy of a stall in a rest room, and use one cell phone to call the other. His youngest son delivered the fatal shot that claimed the life of Bob. He retrieved the weapon from the zip lock back with a pair of vice grips placed half way down the barrel. He held and aimed the gun at its target with the grips and used a paper towel to operate the trigger. He place the weapon in the grass and drove the motor bike to a rest area just outside of Cape Girardeau and walk into the woods when the area was without a visitor. A few minutes later his mother arrived, and they drove back to Cape Girardeau. A change of cloths and washing of the hands, arms and face removed any gun power residue. A few calls made to the house then a call to Sonya to check on Bob was made and that is when the body was found.

It might have been a great story to be told or written, or maybe a great story line for one of the CSI TV shows but it would never happen. It dwelled in the minds of his wife and son, it created such nightmares that a just five years later they took each other’s life so the nightmares would end.
