The Carriage House Hotel in Las Vegas is a Good Place for People with Food Allergies

For a person with food allergies, traveling can be a hassle. But for those traveling to Las Vegas, the Carriage House hotel makes the logistics a little bit easier. The hotel offers rooms with full kitchens at an affordable price, as well as smoke-free floors.

Full Kitchens Allow People with Allergies to Prepare Their Own Food

For the past 10 years, I’ve been on a very limited diet and cannot eat most restaurant food, so I always look for good place with a full kitchen where I can prepare my own meals. In May 2011, my family stayed in the Carriage House hotel, and I was very pleased with the kitchen facilities. The kitchen had a four-burner stove, a sink with two compartments, a full-size refrigerator complete with freezer, a microwave and a dishwasher. They all functioned just fine (a condition I learned not to take for granted when a Chicago hotel’s refrigerator stayed a room temperature).

In addition, the kitchen was furnished with silverware, a sharp knife, a spatula, hot pad, a pitcher, pots and pans, baking dishes, dishwashing soap and other things you would need for cooking and cleaning up.

The hotel did not provide a can opener or plastic containers for storing cooked food, and I was glad that I had brought my own.

If we were going to be out and about at lunch time, I cooked my food and then kept it in a little container with blue ice packets, so I was happy to have the large freezer to keep those cold.

Getting Groceries-Lots of Choices for People with Allergies

My family rented a car, and we were able to go to a nice Vons supermarket that had all the food I needed. The hotel desk staff told me that it’s also possible to take a bus a couple of miles down to the Whole Foods Market. They also had a “groceries to-go” service whereby a guests could order groceries delivered to their rooms.

Smoke-Free Floors a Comfort for People with Allergies

If you have food allergies, it’s also likely that smoke will bother you, and there is plenty of smoke everywhere in Las Vegas. After years and years of smoke-filled gambling sessions, the casinos seep it from every pore. That’s why it was so nice to return to our hotel and its smoke-free spaces. The room we rented was smoke-free, and the whole floor was smoke-free, so we didn’t have to pass by any smoky rooms on the way to the elevator.

Reasonable Price

Our family visited in May 2011, and we were happy with the rates. They give an AARP discount, and we were able to get our rooms for under $90 a night. Since we went right before Memorial Day, I imagine the room rates were cheaper than they would have been during the tourist high season.

Convenient Location

The Carriage House hotel is located one block off the strip between the MGM Grand and Planet Hollywood. That one block is very long. It’s almost half a mile to the strip, but we found that we could enter the side door of Planet Hollywood and walks through their air-conditioned “Miracle Mile” of shops and emerge out the front door right on the strip, and close to the bus stop as well.

We thought that we were on the nicest part of the strip, close to the Bellagio with its fountains which perform a sort of water ballet choreographed to music. It’s well worth going into the main entrance to see the “Fiori di Como,” an amazing chandelier consisting of 2000 hand blown colorful glass blossoms by glass sculptor Dale Chihuly.

We also discovered that we could enter the back door of the MGM Grand and walks to the air-conditioning out through the front door to access the southern part of the strip. While walking through, be sure to take a look at the lion habitat which has trainers who play with the lions to keep them active.

All in all, the Carriage House hotel provides the amenities that a person with food allergies need.
