The Best and Worst Moments of the 2012 Grammy Awards

Over the weekend the 2012 Grammy Awards were held honoring the most talented and successful musicians in the industry including everyone from indie musician Bon Iver to powerhouse vocalist Adele. It was music’s biggest night and we pick the best and worst moments.

Best: Adele Sweeping the Awards

Adele is one singer who is completely unstoppable. The songbird swept the Grammys winning six awards and giving a killer performance with her hit “Rolling in the Deep.” The British vocalist recently underwent surgery on her vocal chords and her Grammy performance was her first major event since the surgery. Adele proved in an industry filled with autotune and skimpy clothing, you can still win big by being an original voice.

Worst: Chris Brown Performing

Only three years ago Chris Brown beat his former girlfriend Rihanna on the same night so why the Grammy lovefest? The singer performed not one, but two songs. Regardless of the Rihanna troubles we weren’t impressed with his moves. The songs he chose to perform were lackluster, which is sad considering one is from his upcoming album. Chris proved he’s great at doing the robot but not much else. This performance was a total failure.

Best: Bon Iver Winning Best New Artist

Indie artist Bon Iver took home Best New Artist, competing against others including Nicki Minaj. We were thrilled when he won, even if he had released several albums previous to his most recent one. He isn’t exactly a ‘new artist’ in the eyes of indie critics but it’s always a great moment when a talented, unknown musician gets recognized for their unique talents.

Worst: Nicki Minaj’s Horror Musical

Thank goodness Nicki Minaj didn’t take home the award for Best New Artist. She’s terrible! The female rapper channeled Lady Gaga with a Catholic infused horror musical performance. We love artists who do things out of the box but Nicki took her weirdness to a level we don’t think most people were prepared for.

Best: Whitney Houston Tribute

In light of the diva’s sudden death we were pleased the Grammys were able to keep Whitney’s spirit alive throughout the night. Host LL Cool J gave a touching prayer at the beginning of the show and Jennifer Hudson later sang Whitney’s toughest and most popular song, “I Will Always Love You.”

We really loved Jennifer’s ability to sing the song flawlessly despite her evident emotions. The only thing missing from this tribute? More Whitney! Why is it Chris Brown gets two songs but the Whitney tribute only received one? Either way, Jennifer did an amazing job.
