Teaching Senior Citizens How to User Computers

Last month, I helped my mom, purchase a computer. At first she was excited, but now she’s getting a little frustrated. Here’s an easy bulleted list with some teaching tips:

1. Be prepared to explain many times.
Repetition is the best way to learn and most people don’t remember all the steps the first time. Therefore, be prepared to repeat steps over and over.
2. Try to answer your phone when they call (or at least return the call quickly).
Most people can’t remember what button they pushed if a day goes by. That is why it is important to try to answer the phone when there are questions.
3. Be patient.
Lots of seniors are afraid to learn computers because they say it makes them feel “stupid.” Keeping your cool when teaching provides a healthy atmosphere in which your parent or grandparent can learn.
4. Garner individual interests.
There’s a lot of fun software that seniors might enjoy. For example, many enjoy organizing pictures of the family. Scrapbook software is one example that may be of interest.

Hope this list is helpful. Computers are a great way to stimulate the minds of seniors and give them a sense of accomplishment at the same time!
