Strange-

African-American History
To many, it still remains a mystery
Our story, and how we are forever changed.
We’re in the land of promise
Where dedication gives way to what is accomplished.

Strange-

For three-hundred years
We were oppressed and lock up in chains
Now, our leaders call “It’s time for change”
And, most assuredly it is
Have you ever seen “The Wiz”?

Strange-

Dorothy unwillingly goes to Oz
And meets the Scare Crow
She helps the lion gain his courage
Kills the witch, and the wizard send her back
White idea turned Black

Strange-
However, we cannot turn back
To the days before our market value was appraised
In the loads we could lift
Still, not get my gist

Strange-
Statistically speaking
By the millions we’re locked in penitentiaries like HBO’s “Oz”
By the millions we’re on welfare
Because nobody in this country wants to play fair
So, tell me what does this mean to you? Where is our ‘Dorothy’?
To kill the witch and help us to courage

Strange-

I wonder did that spirit die
In 1968
With a bullet’s hate…
Can’t change the past, so what legacy of ours will last?
‘We were an oppressed people who stayed oppressed…’
‘Or, that we stood up, and put those negative stereotypes to rest.’

Strange-

Now I have a bright idea,
Tell me if anything does it lack-
What do you picture white?
What do you picture black?
The KKK and the Black Panthers
Holding hands….
If you consider white and black the color of man-
Then you simply misunderstand

Strange-

Tell me what’s your suit,
Haven’t you had enough of…?
Strange,
“Strange Fruit”

“To the early soul speakers, this poem extends salute.”
