St. Clair, Mo., Teen Shot in Foot During Hunting Mishap

An 18-year-old St. Clair (Mo.) High School senior is recovering the the hospital after he was accidentally shot in the foot while he and two of his 17-year-old friends were out raccoon hunting.

According to the Missourian, the accident occurred on Thursday around 8:30 p.m, and took place near the Meramec River’s River Round access point, just off of Old Cove Road.

The mother of the victim, Gina Sumner, identified her son as Tyler Sumner to the Missouri Conservation Department St. Louis District Supervisor, Dennis Twyman. His injuries are not life-threatening or considered serious. He has a flesh wound, if you will.

The names of the 17-tear-olds have not been released to the public, nor have the details regarding which one shot Tyler Sumner as an investigation is still in the process. Twyman has said his report will not be finalized for up to four weeks. It is a possibility that their hunting licenses will be suspended for such carelessness.

This is a prime example of an accident that can occur when people are not paying attention and not taking firearms seriously. Sumner is very lucky he did not get hurt as bad as he possibly could have. You should never point your weapon at anything but the game you are hunting and you should always keep the safety on until you are ready to take the shot. Hopefully his friends learned a thing or two from the incident and will be more careful from here on out.

At this time the status of the raccoon is unknown. Given the official report, I would assume that the raccoon was fatally wounded and the boys were about to put it out of its misery before the accident happened.
