Ornate mirrors are becoming quite popular in many homes across the country. However, the only problem with them is that they tend to be quite expensive. What most people do not realize is that creating a lookalike is much more cost effect and oh-so easy. This simple ceiling medallion wall art project not only looks great, it is super affordable.
For This Project, You Will Need:
– One ceiling medallion
– Medium or fine grit sandpaper
– Tack cloth or other soft cloth
– Krylon Indoor Outdoor Primer in All-Purpose White
– Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in a color of your choice
– Small round mirror piece (available at craft supply stores)
– Epoxy glue
– Hardware for hanging
– Newspaper and/or a large drop cloth
To keep the mess of this project at a minimum, it is important to first cover the area with several sheets of newspaper and/or a large drop cloth. Gently smooth out any rough areas on the ceiling medallion with a sheet of medium grit sandpaper. Use a tack cloth or other similar soft cloth to remove dust and debris from the sanding process.
Lay the ceiling medallion flat. Prime the entire medallion with a coat of Krylon Indoor Outdoor Primer in All-Purpose White. Once dry, add three to four coats of Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in a color of your choice. If the color hue is not deep enough, continue to add more coats until you are happy with the shade. Let the paint dry fully.
Lay the medallion face down. Apply epoxy glue around the opening on the back of the painted medallion. Place the mirror piece over the epoxy glue so that the shiny side shows through to the front of the medallion through the hole. Press firmly to ensure that the glue adheres the mirror to the painted medallion fully. Dry completely.
Install hardware onto the back of the medallion and hang your new mirror piece, as desired!
TIP: Ceiling medallions are so easy to find in your local area. Check home improvement stores first. (Online home improvement retailers are also an excellent source.) If you live in an area known for older home and renovation, check with a contractor. Occasionally, they have a ceiling medallion or two left from a remodeling project. Also remember that refurbished medallions will probably need more sanding and painting than a brand new variety.
