Severna Park Bowl, Keeping Children Entertained

When the nice sunny days of summer start to become less plentiful, Autumn offers a change in weather. In Severna Park, Maryland, which is not far from Annapolis that means cool fall breezes and thunderstorms as the weather changes. Parents need to find activities to do indoors with their children, and one of those activities is bowling. Bowling at Severna Park Bowl at 840 Ritchie Highway offers plenty of indoor entertainment to escape the less than ideal fall weather.

Severna Park Bowl features 16 lanes with standard 10-pin lanes. Locals know those as the big pins. These are large pins with balls ranging from 8 pounds to 16 pounds. There are also 16 lanes of a regional form of bowling called duck pin bowling. The pins are approximately half the size of full sized pins and placed closer to each other in duck pin bowling. In 10-pin bowling, each bowler gets two attempts to knock all 10 pins down, in duck pin they get three tries. Both games are played on lanes of identical length and last for 10 frames.

Severna Park Bowl offers quite a few enhancements to make bowling easier for children. They offer bumpers the front desk can activate to keep the ball from going into the gutter. Hey, even parents might want to use those to help them out. For young children that can’t lift the bowling ball, Severna Park Bowl supplies ramps to push the ball down, instead of lifting it and rolling it.

There are leagues throughout the year for children and adults. The children’s leagues are typically Saturday morning with an adult-youth league on Sunday nights. With only 32 lanes, this can make it challenging to find lanes open before noon. Actually, it can be very difficult to find lanes open during Saturday and Sunday afternoons in general at Severna Park Bowl. This is because they also offer birthday party packages for children, which can take up a majority of the lanes.

Don’t worry though, your children will still be entertained if they have to wait around for a bowling lane to open up. There is a small arcade with games such as air hockey, roller hockey, and games of skill and chance that award tickets which can be redeemed for prizes. If they would rather relax with a snack, there is a snack stand that offers drinks, soft pretzels, pizza and sandwiches. Beer is available for adults.

For older children and adults, there are additional forms of entertainment in addition to the year-round leagues at Severna Park Bowl. On Friday and Saturday nights, the bowling alley turns off the lights and turns on blacklights as well as plays loud music to entertain you while bowling. On some of those nights you pay per game, on others you pay a flat fee for two hours of bowling.
