Science and Its Many Faces in My Career

Ever since I was a little kid, I have loved science. I was never a girl that was afraid to get her hands dirty and if it meant figuring out how something worked, I was all over it. I loved every part of science from the physical sciences like biology and chemistry to the social sciences like sociology and anthropology. I studied everything I could. Eventually it led me to a 20 year career in the medical laboratory sciences field and finally to my writing career.

My Career Then and Now

Having worked in the medical field for over 20 years, I have seen science advance in so many different ways, and we are only just beginning to see what is possible. I worked for many years in hospital laboratories testing blood for different viruses and running multiple different tests to check the health status of patients. Due to my own medical conditions, I had to move out of the laboratory and behind the computer, but my work in science was far from over.

Now, instead of running the tests, I cover new and exciting research being conducted in the medical field from behind my computer at home. I spend every day learning and reporting on new research being conducted on various treatments for diseases and on new discoveries being made.

While my passion is definitely in medical science, I have always maintained an interest in all the other areas of science and my new position as a freelance writer for a scientific community allows me to once again branch out of the medical field. On a daily basis, I cover scientific research being conducted on everything from wind and solar energy to technology and computers, as well as the medical field. This new position reminded me of just how much I loved science and how important I feel it is to everyone.

The Benefits of Science

As a mother of 4 children, I believe that science education is a must for every child and I make it a part of each day to discuss a scientific topic with them. Some days we will use my articles as a jump start for conversation or they will come to me with questions. I keep regular subscriptions to scientific magazines, including ones specific for children. I always encourage my children to ask why and hope that they learn to understand just how important those why questions are and how much fun the science of finding out the answers can be.
