Poison Apple Halloween Cookies

Halloween is fast approaching and you may or may not have gotten everything you need to throw your big, holiday bash. Maybe you’ve just gotten out last year’s Halloween decorations, or carved some jack-o-lanterns this year, but you’re going to need more than that. If you’re having lots of guests you’ll need lots of food. Many people go out of their way to make creepy foods which look disgusting. But spooky foods don’t necessarily have to look repulsive. Fix something like poison apple cookies and the connotation is eerie enough without the food actually being nauseating.

It’s easy to make poison apple cookies for a child’s party or your own. When guests see the unusual cookies they’ll immediately know that these are “poison” cookies, just by the way they look. However, those brave enough to try them, will find out that they’re more scrumptious than they are unnerving.

Make sugar cookies from a boxed mix or a recipe. Mix in red food coloring so that the finished cookies are red, like an apple. Use an apple cookie cutter to make the cookies, bake according to the box or recipe, and allow to cool completely. Another option is to use refrigerated cookie dough. Allow it to sit at room temperature for a short period of time, then knead the food coloring into the dough. Bake and cool, according to the instructions on the wrapper.

If you’re using fondant, you can eliminate the red food coloring, and just use an apple-shaped fondant section to cover the cookie. Use a green shape of fondant, which covers the top are of the apple, to create the poison. If you’re not using fondant, simply spread some green frosting smoothly over an area at the top of the cookie. It’s easy to find green frosting at Halloween but, if you can’t find any, just stir a couple of drops of green food coloring into white frosting. Create a look which appears that the poison is running down over the apple rather than spread the frosting straight across the top of the cookie. If you want, you can drop a couple of raisins on the poison to further embellish the look of the apple.

The poison apples are great for a group of girls at a Halloween party, but are also perfect treats to offer to adults. We all know the story about the poison apple so it fits in perfectly with Halloween, the spooky holiday.
