Penn State Hires FBI Director for Investigation: An Alum’s Reaction

It looks like Penn State is serious about finding out all of the information surrounding the Jerry Sandusky scandal that has drawn nothing but negative attention to the school. Penn State had said they would conduct an internal investigation and they have found the man to do it. Louis Freeh, a former director of the FBI, will lead the independent investigation. This hiring is one of the few smart moves the school has done since the scandal broke. Hopefully, Freeh can find all of the facts that Penn State alumni like me have been waiting to hear.

Freeh obviously brings a lot of integrity to this job. He was in charge of the FBI for nearly a decade so knows how things like this should work. By hiring a man like this, the school is sending a message that it is serious about finding out the truth. Freeh has said exactly what I want to hear. He will investigate all facets of the case as well as all involved. That includes the athletic department and the board of trustees.

The key thing about this move is that Freeh is independent. He will not have allegiance to anyone at the school and that is necessary. No matter how hard it might be for people to hear, we need to know all of the facts. We need to everything from Sandusky’s crimes to all of the people at Penn State that knew about it. I think Freeh will be able to do that. He will have a team full of experts that can find anything out. He also said the investigation will go back until 1975, two years before Jerry Sandusky founded the now infamous Second Mile charity.

This is a positive step for Penn State. It tells everyone that the school is serious about cleaning everything up involving this case. It also sends the message that the school is ready to be held accountable for whatever Freeh and his team find out. It could be a long process but I am confident that Freeh will find out how far everything goes in this case. The victims, their families, and the proud alumni of Penn State deserve to know the truth. I give the school credit for feeling the same way.
