Now on DVD: Rio

Synopsis: Blu, a domesticated blue macaw from Minnesota, is brought to Brazil to mate with Jewel, the only other one of his kind. However, when bird smugglers kidnap him and Jewel, they need to escape while coping with the fact Blu can’t fly.

Who’s in it? Leslie Mann, Anne Hathaway, Jesse Eisenberg, Jamie Foxx, George Lopez and Wanda Sykes.

What I liked about this movie: First of all, I loved all the color. There were times when I would lose track of what was going on in the movie just because I was admiring the scenery in the background and, when they had all those different colored birds in the beginning, it really got my attention (and has me wanting to visit Brazil now).

When I first saw previews for this movie, I figured it was going to be something my kids would love but not necessarily something I would enjoy as much as them. However, the movie does have a good mix of (subtle) adult oriented humor as well as jokes that were geared toward the younger viewers. This kept the movie entertaining for all of us.

I especially loved the villain in this film, the cockatoo named Nigel. He was so evil but, at the same time, when he gives a bit of his background, it’s easy to feel sorry for him at times too.

What I didn’t like about this movie: One of my biggest complaints about this movie is the plot honestly wasn’t anything all that original. In fact, the movie reminded me both of the film Madagascar (with an army of monkeys instead of an army of lemurs) and the movie Open Season (with a domesticated blue macaw instead of a domesticated bear). Come to think of it, his inability to fly also managed to remind me a bit of the movie Dumbo.

Final Opinion: It’s a cute movie that is worth watching. But, it isn’t anything overly unique either. My guess is, if you watch this, you’ll get the feeling you’ve seen it before.

My Grade: 3 stars out of a possible 5.
