No Heartfelt Fear

The cloak of darkness

Gives rise to terror

And the fear paralyzes my limbs.

Danger or a misplaced conception of reality?

Doesn’t matter – I grind to a halt.

My toes try to separate themselves from my foot

Taking lead from my toes, my fingers retract into my palm.

Then, I hear a whisper “do not fear, I am close” but my heart goes unheard

Except for its rushed pounding.

Again, quiet prodding from my heart pleads “you can”.

My fingers struggle to overcome their panic

And slowly unfurl.

Grey matter ignites, willing my toes to stride.

With a muffled chuckle my toes retort ‘you fools’, but knowing resistance is futile.

Heart gives a quiet sigh as we join in the same resolve

No fear will render us helpless

We step forward knowing triumph is ours
