NFL Pick Em for the Conference Championships

Last week’s picks: 2-2

Season total (including playoffs): 164-84

This Sunday, the AFC and NFC Championship games take place. Most people probably had the Ravens and Patriots in the AFC title game. With that said, not many (if any) had the Giants facing the 49ers. Each team has taken their own path to get to this game, with one more game hanging in the balance.

Let’s get to the picks.

Sunday, January 22

AFC Championship

Baltimore Ravens @ New England Patriots – The Baltimore Ravens have accomplished two of their goals this season: clinching a first round bye and getting to the AFC Championship game. It wasn’t easy for Baltimore, though. They struggled against the Texans and actually were not too impressive against a team with a third-string quarterback. The New England Patriots, on the flip side, dominated the Denver Broncos and clinched their first AFC Championship game in four seasons. This game is not necessarily a slam-dunk since Baltimore usually plays New England fairly well and they did beat them there in the wild card round a few years ago. However, the Ravens are too streaky of a team, were not that good on the road this season and did not impress last week. I like New England by more than a touchdown. My pick: New England Patriots

NFC Championship

New York Giants @ San Francisco 49ers – This matchup continues the trend of this year’s playoffs with the NFC having the more intriguing games. The Giants, who are on a roll, went into Lambeau Field last week and routed the best team in football. Meanwhile, on the day earlier, the 49ers upset the Saints (arguably the second best team in the NFL) in one of the best postseason games of all-time. Unlike the AFC Championship game, this title game is more of a toss-up. When they played in week 10, it was exactly like that, too. The Giants have the edge at quarterback and on offense, but the 49ers have the edge on defense and special teams. Alex Smith proved to the world last week that he has what it takes to win a big game. Can he do it two times in a row? Both teams are on a bit of a “Cinderella run” but I just think that the Giants are too hot right now. I like them in a close one. My pick: New York Giants

So, there you have it. I have a re-match of Super Bowl XLII for my picks. What about you?
