New Year’s Week Movie Events in Hollywood and Los Angeles

This New Year’s week brings a multitude of viewing pleasures for moviegoers in Los Angeles, including a star-studded red carpet premiere, triple and double features, screwball comedies from the golden age of Hollywood, indie screenings, and so much more.

Friday, Dec. 30, 2011

Alfred Hitchcock’s “Vertigo” (1958), starring James Stewart and Kim Novak, screens at the Egyptian Theatre at 6712 Hollywood Blvd. as part of the “Bigger Than Life: 70MM!” series. Admission is $11:00. The evening begins at 7:30 p.m.

“New Year’s Evil” (1981), a punk rock horror flick starring Kip Niven and Roz Kelly, airs at the Cinefamily at 611 N. Fairfax beginning at midnight for $10.00.

Sunday, Jan. 1, 2012

The Skirball Center presents “Once More, With Feeling” (1960), starring Yul Brynner and Kay Kendall, at 2701 N. Sepulveda Blvd. at 1:30 p.m. Admission is free.

It’s a “Back to the Future” Triple Feature at the Egyptian starting at 5:00 p.m. A digital restoration of the original movie made in 1985 will be followed by “Back to the Future Part II” (1989) and “Back to the Future Part III” (1990). Tickets are $11.00.

Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2012

The stars walk the red carpet at the Egyptian Theatre for the premiere of the horror-thriller “Beneath the Darkness” (2012). The film stars Dennis Quaid, Aimee Teegarden, and Tony Oller. Tickets can be obtained only through the studio, but anyone can watch the stars arrive for free at 6:30 p.m.

It’s a classic screwball comedy double feature at the Million Dollar Theater as “It Happened One Night” (1934) with Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert and “His Girl Friday” (1940) starring Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell air at 3rd and Broadway in downtown Los Angeles. The show starts at 7:30 p.m. and costs $9.00.

A rarely seen print from the UCLA film archive of “Casanova” (1928), directed by Alexandre Volkoff, screens at 8:00 p.m. at the Cinefamily as part of its First Wednesday of the Month silent series. The cost is $12.00.

Joshua Leonard’s indie comedy “The Lie” (2011) will screen at the Downtown Independent at 251 S. Main St. at 9:00 p.m. Tickets are $10.00. The movie is based on a short story by T.C. Boyle.

Thursday, Jan. 5, 2012

Filmmaker Penelope Spheeris will take part in a panel discussion and reception following the screening of eight short films by Oscar- and Palme d’Or-winners and other celebrated women at the 7th Annual Focus on Female Directors series at the Egyptian. The night begins at 7:30 p.m. and costs $11.00.

“New Low” (2010), an indie romantic-comedy by Adam Bowers that was introduced at Sundance, screens at the Downtown Independent at 8:00 p.m. for $12.00. A reception with the cast and crew follows the movie.

“Weekend” (2011), a critically acclaimed gay romantic drama, is on the marquee at the Cinefamily through Jan. 11. Admission is $12.00. Check times. This movie was the winner of Audience Awards at both SXSW and Outfest film festivals.
