New Threat to NYC/DC on 9 11 Anniversary

So this new news about their being a threat to New York City and/or Washington DC via an al-Qaeda style terror attack is just par for the course for many New Yorkers. When I came upon the news late last night (Thursday) I didn’t know what to expect when I came upon the city today.

I began my day early at the train station in Southeast (Brewster) as I had stayed in Connecticut the night before. I had been to the train around the same time the past couple of days and there had usually been a full parking lot. But when I got to the train station this morning the parking was apathetic. I figured it may have just been the 4 day work week some in Putnam County are able to enjoy. It didn’t occur to me until later that this absence of people may have been related to planned absences because of the 9/11 anniversary or even related back to this threat.

However when I got to the city everything seemed business as usual. If anything there were fewer bodies on the street making the typically high NYPD presence that much more pronounced. But when I approached some New Yorkers and asked about their reactions to the terror threats; they couldn’t seem to be bothered.

“I’ve got other things to think about” said one man who breezed by my with a flip of the hand.

“That’s news?” said another older guy at Grand Central Terminal. Everyone was busy bustling about their day even if there was this terror threat.

New Yorkers have had to process these “terror warnings” several times in the last 10 years; it is something that, it’s true, just starts to wear off of you. Still the fact that this terror threat involved specific details, a number of people, and rental vans made me take pause. Moreover chatter that there were some people discovered in other parts of the world with illegal explosives makes the parallel that much more sobering.

The terror attacks of 9/11/01 will be having its 10th anniversary on Sunday. What other news or events comes from this, we’ll just have to wait and see.
