Navigating Through the Senior Maze

Seniors and their families are often perplexed about how to obtain assistance. Many resources are available to ensure a senior’s safety and well-being. The first step in receiving services is determining which services are needed. Geriatric care managers (GCMs) can assess seniors and develop a plan of care. A GCM can be found online at http://www.caremanager.org. Geriatric care managers also can arrange any necessary services as well. Assistance is also available from Area Agency on Aging (AAA). AAA has offices in every state and every county has a local office. Find your local office by visiting their website http://www.n4a.org. The Area Agency on Aging can help with transportation for medical appointments and in most states AAA can assist with arranging services to help seniors stay at home versus entering the nursing home. Families remember an assessment or evaluation must be completed to determine what plan of care to pursue.
