When choosing between potential female Harry Potter costumes, most people immediately think of Hermione Granger and Luna Lovegood. A few might opt to dress like Ginny Weasley or Professor McGonagall. Otherwise, female Harry Potter costumes are pretty limited. This is especially true for female villains from the series. After all, the only female death eater is Bellatrix Lestrange. This year, try something new and dress up in a Narcissa Malfoy costume for Halloween.
Outfit
Harry Potter fans will never know for sure what actress Helen McCrory wore for her Narcissa Malfoy costume. In an interview with The Sunday Times , she admitted, “If I told you what I was wearing, I would probably have to kill you; it’s a bit like working for MI5. My costume is very couture, with beautifully sculpted silhouettes. ” While there’s no way to know the exact design, you can imitate the Narcissa Malfoy costume by observing her outfits in the Harry Potter movies.
This outfit may be more difficult to replicate than other Harry Potter costumes, but it is far from impossible. You’re going to want to look for a button-down dress in a dingy green or gray color. In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1, Narcissa also wears a brown beret-style hat. Add some simple gold jewelry, pantyhose and a pair of practical black pumps and you’re good to go. If it is cold out, you always have the option of wearing a black cloak. Since cloaks are a part of most Harry Potter costumes, they can be found in most Halloween shops.
If you want an extra accessory, you can carry a wand with you to complete the Narcissa Malfoy costume. Wands can be found in many Halloween stores and theatre shops, but you can also make your own wand at home.
Hair
The hair is probably the trickiest part of the Narcissa Malfoy costume. In the movie, Helen McCrory has blonde hair with black streaks, a little like Cruella DeVille. You can recreate this look by buying a blonde wig and dying sections of it black. If you have blonde hair, you can dye part of it black or recreate Narcissa’s 40s look by putting in pin curls the night before Halloween. The book does not mention black streaks in Narcissa’s hair, so if you prefer to stay blonde, that’s still an option.
