My Big Hair Disaster and How I Fixed It

I love to color my hair. There’s something about picking out that new box color at the store and running home and getting to work. I get so giddy when I rinse the color out of my hair, wrap the towel around my head and then reveal that awesome new color in the mirror. Until one day, when I chose the very wrong color, I plummeted into a panic attack.

Beauty tip #1: Never go from black to blonde in one application. I know this. I’ve always known this. I had dyed my hair black one winter and towards spring, I decided to go back to dark blonde. My natural hair color is dark brown so I didn’t notice how long my roots have gotten when I decided to go blonde. The “big reveal” in the mirror certainly did not show blonde hair, rather, the bottom half of my hair was dark brown and very long golden roots at the top. I looked like a skunk who walked through a peroxide waterfall.

Beauty tip #2: Don’t trust anyone else’s advice on bad hair mistakes except for professionals. A friend suggested going to a beauty supply store and ask what I needed to do to fix this problem. They suggested a protein conditioner, let it sit all night in a shower cap and then weaving a new color with a highlighting cap to blend the two colors together. I woke up with “straw hair” and the new color didn’t even change the color of my hair at all.

Beauty tip #3: Overnight protein treatments can ruin your hair. I was out of ideas except to go to a very expensive spa and beg for help. She explained that beauty supply employees are not always the best resource when it comes to serious hair mistakes such as mine. She suggested repairing my hair before fixing the problem. She gave me a caviar treatment and then I had to go back the next day for a full weave to fix the color.

This beauty mistake cost me over $200, not to mention fried hair for a couple of weeks. The spa professional was able to fix my hair, but I still had a hint of my crazy fiasco for about a year when the roots grew completely out. At least I was able to live with it without having to wear hats everyday!
