Modern Family Wins Big in Comedy Categories at 2011 63rd Primetime Emmy Awards

On Sunday, September 18, 2011, “Modern Family” almost swept the 2011 63rd Primetime Emmy Awards with wins in five major comedy characters. The show managed to pull upsets in categories that seemed to be shoe-ins for other comedy series. In addition to “Modern Family” being the bell of the ball, PBS’s British miniseries “Downton Abby” managed to outshine movies produced by some of cable’s best.

The cast of “Modern Family” did something unprecedented on television. Because the show consists of an ensemble cast, the stars entered ballads in the supporting actor and actress categories. They won five awards, even pulling an upset when Julie Bowen beat out favorites Jane Lynch (“Glee”) and Betty White (“Hot in Cleveland”). They took home the biggy, best comedy series.

Cable television managed to put out a number of award nominated movies, with actors giving superb performances. HBO led the pack with “Mildred Pierce,” “Cinema Verite” and “Too Big To Fail.” It was the British miniseries “Downton Abbey,” though, which took home the most statues, including the Emmy for best miniseries or TV movie. “Mildred Pierce” did win two awards for best actress – Kate Winslet and best actor – Guy Pearce.

“Friday Night Lights” earned a nice going away present to commemorate its final season. The critically-acclaimed yet low-rated show earned two Emmys. Kyle Chandler won the award for best actor in a drama, and Jason Katims won for best writing in a drama series.

As the new season picks up steam this week, many Emmy-nominated shows will be entering transitional periods, with cast members leaving and new ones taking their place. Other shows will be bidding farewell to the television landscape. We have another year to see if there are any breakout shows and stars among the new bunch. See you next year.
