Me and Benji

Benji was not adopted. He was brought from a young man who could no longer care for him. As much as I wanted to adopt, when I saw Benji, I knew that he was my “son”. Now six years later and my love for Benji just kept growing stronger. The best decision I ever made.

Late summer of 2005 was when I realized that I was not getting my monthly period. So I went to see my doctor to find out what was going on. He took some blood and had some test done. A week later he informed me that I was in the beginning stages of menopause. I totally freaked. Several of my friends said that I should be very happy. I cried like a baby. My doctor wanted to prescribe the usual medications that most women with menopause take. I declined and decided to get a dog instead. Now I know that it seems crazy but that was what came out of my mouth as soon as I heard the word “hormones”.

I decided to get a tiny dog that I can throw in a bag and keep going. I searched several pet adoption sites. I got the run around from a few agencies and some of the dogs I looked at didn’t give me that warm and fuzzy feeling.

Then one day while visiting my girlfriend Stacie in February of 2006, I told her my frustration in trying to find a dog. She told me I should consider a Cockapoo. At that moment, I searched for cockapoos on Craigslist. I found a picture of a dog that looked more like a Cocker Spaniel. The dog looked so sad. He was definitely not tiny. He weighed about 25lbs with beautiful markings and his name is Benji.

When I first met Benji, he was 4 months old. He was quiet and never barked the entire time that I was introduced to him. My dear friend, Gerard came with me. He said, “Debi, that’s your dog”. The gentleman that sold Benji to me said that he left him alone a lot some times over night.

Though Benji was not adopted, I believe that we saved each other. He and I were meant to be. I never knew I could love a dog as much as I love Benji. He is the best dose of medication that I could take.
