Keloid Scar Removal: What Risks Are Associated?

Keloid scars can be unsightly but also very painful in those who suffer from the unique skin complication. While there are many treatment options for keloid scar removal on the market today, most patients opt for laser removal or surgical removal of the keloid. If you are considering your options for removal of your keloid scars, it is important to consider the risks that may also be associated with these same procedures.

A keloid scar is a type of skin condition that manifests, typically, after an injury arises but in some adults the keloid scar may develop in response to abnormal tissue formation which causes raised scarring to occur. In many cases, keloid scars do not respond well to topical treatment and, as a result, your dermatologist may recommend laser scar removal as the most viable option for removing and preventing recurrence of the scar.

When preparing for laser removal of the keloid scar, be sure you are also prepared for the risks that may develop. While this type of scar removal can often prevent recurrence of keloid scars, it is not 100 percent effective at this. In some cases, patients have recurring keloid scars that, on rare occurrence, may be worse than the initial scarring that was removed.

In addition to the risk for recurrence of the keloid scar, there may also be a risk for infection in the location where the keloid scar removal takes place. This type of infection can be controlled by using betadine during the procedure and by applying triple anti-biotic ointment to the area where the scar was, much like you would care for the tummy tuck scars removal post-op procedure. If infection is not well controlled, this may lead to the further development of recurrent keloid scarring.

For most patients, keloid scar removal is safe and effective when done as part of a laser scar removal process. If you are considering this option, be sure you understand these risks – including the risk for recurrence of your scar along with the methods by which your dermatologist may minimize infection and allergic reaction. In doing so, you should have a much safer, and healthier, outcome to your keloid scar removal procedure.
