Improving and Preserving Your Memory

Doctors point out that if you think you’re losing your memory, you probably aren’t. Granting, there may be times when you think you’d forget your head if it wasn’t attached, having the concern is a good sign.

Denying that you have any memory problems at all is a major sign of serious memory loss. You can’t remember not remembering, and you get offended when someone tells you that you’ve forgotten.

While memory loss is a natural progression as we age, it doesn’t always have to be bad. Yes, some illnesses, conditions and medications could make it difficult (if not impossible), but for most of us, these tips can be a great help.

Learn Something New Daily: It doesn’t have to be of a scholarly nature, it could be as easy as learning a new craft. You could learn to crochet or embroider. Perhaps you’ve always been interested in wood working or figuring out how to read music. Your brain needs to be used to stay useful.

Word Puzzles: These are great and they come in a range of difficulty and styles. Even if your memory has started to go, word search puzzles can help. Crossword puzzles are one of the best tools of keeping your brain healthy and active. I do recommend a good crossword puzzle dictionary, some of the clues can be vague, archaic and only found in these puzzles.

Exercise: Exercise doesn’t just help the body, it helps your brain. A new study indicates that physical activity can increase blood flow to the brain. That may not mean much at first glance, but the brain uses twenty percent of the oxygen you breathe in. The more oxygen it has, the better it performs and your blood is what brings it. That’s why it’s important.

Naturally, you have to be careful when you choose which exercises to do, especially if you are older. Talk to your doctor to find out what is safe and how long it should be done. That will help keep injuries from sidelining you.

Don’t Sit at Home: If you can get out and be socially active, please do so. A real interaction with other human beings will help keep you and your brain stimulated. It will prevent boredom and it keeps you away from the TV trap. While watching some television is OK, watching it all day, day after day can cause a lot of health problems.

Even if you are experiencing some memory loss, the above actions could stop it, and in some cases perhaps reverse it a little. Talk to your doctor, as there are also prescription medications that can be beneficial. Keeping your memory is worth the effort.
