Picking out a single stroller was easy for me. I looked for one that was lightweight and compatible with my car seat. However, after learning I was expecting a second child, the decision for a double stroller was more difficult. Here are some tips on how to pick the right stroller for two kids.
Size
The weight of a stroller has always been an issue for me. With two kids, a stroller can get heavy pretty quickly. Another issue is if the stroller can fit through a single door. If you are concerned about fitting through narrow areas, you might want a tandem or stadium style stroller. This type of stroller has a seat in the front and in the back. Some side-by-side strollers are narrow enough to fit through standard doors.
Age
Age plays a huge role in the type of stroller to choose. For twins, make sure that both seats are car seat compatible. If you have a preschooler, you might do well with a compact stroller where the older child can sit or stand in the back. There are even some platforms that attach on the back of any stroller. If your child is at the age where they no longer go in a stroller, you might not need a double stroller at all.
Extra Features
I love my single stroller. However, I never purchased a cup holder. It’s not a huge deal. Yet, when I’m on a long walk, it’s nice to have a water bottle in reaching distance. In addition, being able to snap in a car seat is helpful. Other good features are seats that recline, food trays and an under the seat basket for belongings.
Ease of Breakdown
As someone with a mobile preschooler, I need to be able to breakdown the stroller quickly. Thus, look for strollers with a single hand release. This enables you to have one hand available to hold a hand or infant carrier.
Activity
My family and I like to go on hikes. In addition, we often walk to the park and sometimes I jog along the back trails in our neighborhood. Thus, for us, a dual jogging stroller was perfect. Jogging strollers absorb the shock of bumpy roads or other rough terrain. For the greatest mobility, I like the ones where the front wheel rotates.
Price
Price, of course, is important for most people. Some double umbrella strollers are less expensive. Also, decide if you can do without some of the “bells and whistles” of more expensive models. Make sure to test-drive the strollers at the store. Sometimes you get what you pay for and spending a little more might save you from buying a replacement in the future. Try second hand stores and look online for gently used strollers too.
Overall, do your research! Look at reviews, ask for recommendations and try before you buy.
