How to Maximize Space in a Teen Bedroom

While master suites in new homes are getting bigger and bigger, kid’s bedrooms are getting smaller. This can be frustrating for a growing teenager as it gets harder and harder to be comfortable in their tiny bedrooms. Here are some tips teenagers can use to care out a little extra space in their bedrooms.

Loft your bed. Raising your bed up to loft height is an excellent way to take advantage of having high ceilings and to create more floor space in your room. The space under the bed can be used for extra closet space, a study area, a sofa or extra bed.

Get rid of items you don’t use. As sentimental as your childhood items may be, it would create some space to get rid of most of the old stuffed animals and toys. You don’t have to give them away or put them in a yard sale, but they should be put in storage to create more space in your teen’s room.

Store more items under your bed. If the idea of a loft bed makes you dizzy, consider raising your bed just and extra foot or two. This will allow you to put dressers or drawer units under your bed. You can also store bins of items you rarely use under the bed.

Use your closet space more creatively. Place a low dresser in your closet to make excellent use of floor space. If you arrange your clothes so that longer clothing items hang in one space, you will have more space in the bottom of your closet. If clothes are not your thing, and your closet is pretty empty, use the closet space to build a homework/office area.

Use built in and modular furniture. Instead of a bulky nightstand, install a wall shelf next to the bed. Fit an awkward dormer with a desk for doing homework or makeup. Build a full wall of storage and combine it with baskets and bins for all the storage space a teenager can need.

Use small scale furniture. Avoid big, bulky items that take up a lot of floor space. Also look for multifunctional furniture that can be used for multiple uses such as a bed that converts into a desk.
