How to Make a Beautiful Heart Pin with Pasta

I enjoy making and giving handmade items to family and friends, and one of the most appreciated items that I have made is a beautiful heart pin. It was not created with metal, fabric, clay or other typical items used in crafting. I made it with dried couscous, decoupage glue and wooden forms, and it was absolutely gorgeous. No one was able to guess that it was created using simple craft supplies and pasta. Consider making this unique heart pin for Valentine’s Day or any gift-giving occasion, and surprise someone special with a gorgeous piece of beautiful handcrafted jewelry.

Necessary Supplies

To make a beautiful heart pin with pasta you will need a flat wooden heart-shaped cutout in a size of your choice, dried couscous, decoupage glue and a small pin back. You will also need acrylic craft paint in a color of your choice, acrylic gloss infused with tiny flecks of iridescent glitter, a small craft brush, narrow gold braided trim, a small ready-made rose designed from ribbon and thick craft glue.

When making my heart pin with pasta I used light pink acrylic craft paint and a white ribbon rose. Keep in mind that absolutely any color combination can be used. Consider painting the pasta heart pin with white acrylic craft paint and topping it with a red ribbon rose. Pink and white are also a nice combination.

Procedure

Begin by combining enough dried pasta and decoupage glue to create a thick mixture that will cover the wooden heart. Spread it evenly over the form. The pasta mixed with glue should completely and thickly cover it. Evenly mound the pasta and glue if desired, and allow it to dry completely before continuing. Depending upon the thickness, this can take up to forty-eight hours.

Once the decoupage glue and pasta mixture dries, coat it using acrylic craft paint of your choice. Allow the paint to dry completely, and seal it with clear gloss that includes iridescent bits of glitter.

After the gloss dries, attach the braided gold trim around the edge of the heart, and attach the ribbon rose to the top center of the heart. After the glue dries to the touch, attach the pin to the back. Let the glue set completely before handling or wearing the pin.

Alternate Heart Pin Options

Use your imagination to alter this basic heart pin design. With a little paint and a small craft brush it can be turned into a broken heart. The heart pin can be trimmed with narrow lace or beadwork instead of gold braid. Consider embellishing it with a small heart or another decoration instead of a ribbon rose. The design options are endless.

I gave the heart pin I made to my great aunt, and I plan on making many more. These beautiful pins look like store-bought works of wearable art, and no one can tell they are created using pasta and other simple craft supplies. They can be presented as gifts, sold for profit and worn with just about anything. Best of all, heart pins made with pasta are inexpensive to make, and they look like high-end pieces of professionally-designed jewelry.
