Medical treatments for sleeping walking

Sometimes sleepwalking is caused by medical conditions and it is therefore advisable to take the sleepwalker to the doctor for a thorough evaluation. If an underlying condition is causing the sleepwalking such as restless leg syndrome, sleep apnea, acid reflux, or seizures, the doctor is going to treat those conditions in order to stop the sleepwalking and of course treat the ailment as well.

The use of medication for sleepwalking will be given only if the sleepwalking is disturbing family life, the sleepwalker is very drowsy during the day and cannot function properly, and if an injury resulting from the sleepwalking has occurred. Doctors will also prescribe medication if all other treatment options have failed.

Types of medications used for sleepwalking

Benzodiazepines – to induce sleep, tricyclic antidepressants, or clonazepam for anxiety. Usually the medication for sleepwalking is only needed for about a month and then the sleepwalking will stop.
