Home Remedies for Brown Spots on the Face

If you have brown spots on your face, don’t despair. Try these home remedies and see the spots fade away.

Finding brown spots on the face is enough to unnerve anyone. First, rest assured that these are mostly hyperpigmentation due to sun exposure. Also known as solar lentigos, they are harmless. To be sure, however, a yearly check by a dermatologist is a good idea. Not only will the dermatologist check the face, the dermatologist will also check parts of the body not easily seen in the mirror.

To lighten brown spots, there are a few home remedies to try. The first is to avoid sun exposure whenever possible. Wearing a large-brimmed hat and sun protective clothing and applying sun block lotion with a sun protective factor of at least 15 are excellent approaches. For the sun block lotion to be most effective, apply it at least 15 minutes before going out in the sun. Reapply it every four hours or after working up a sweat or swimming. With time, some brown spots may fade and new ones shouldn’t develop.

As for brown spots that are already on the face, be advised that the longer the brown spot has been there, the less successful the home remedy might be. Home remedies for brown spots on the face work best on exfoliated skin. For a gentle exfoliating agent, mix sugar crystals with olive oil or baby oil and rub gently until the sugar dissolves completely. Rinse well and pat dry. Do this once a week.

Plain yogurt will lighten some of the spots. Apply it every night until the brown spots have faded. To intensify the effect of the yogurt, add lemon or lime juice to it. Some people use lemon juice alone; others find that it stings too much. It might be worth trying both fruit juice alone and in combination with yogurt to see which works better.

Oranges and tomatoes are other fruits that can bleach brown spots. Mash either one and apply for 10 to 15 minutes. If desired, the mashed fruit can be combined with soothing aloe vera gel. Because the bleaching agents inside oranges and tomatoes oxidize in when exposed to air, it’s best to mash a fresh one each night.
