Holiday Family Fun Events in and Around Austin, Texas — Christmas Strolls, Light Displays, Bazaars and More

With the absence of our beloved Trail of Lights, doing the holidays in Austin isn’t quite what it used to be. However, it might be just be the ticket to inspire you and your family to get more familiar with some of the traditions in the area that you haven’t tried yet.

You’d be surprised at what is out there. To the north, Georgetown offers several special events including a Square Lighting Ceremony as well as a Christmas Stroll. In Hutto, you don’t want to miss Winter Nights. In Cedar Park, you’ll want to check out their tree lighting ceremony which also features a visit by the man in red! And, if you are all about holiday lighting displays, you’ll be glad to know you can find some when you head to Marble Fall for the Walkway of Lights, to Bastrop for the River of Lights or Buda for their own Trail of Lights.

To add to that nice list, there are also special holiday ice skating options offered by both Whole Foods Market and The Oasis, TX! In addition, San Marcos offers up a mutliple day event — The Sights and Sounds of Christmas.

Of course, while, here in Austin, we offer no trail of lights, but we can be thankful for our traditional and memorable Zilker Tree. It IS still there for the whole family to enjoy. I will never forget my first time there as a college student. A word to the wise, hold off on the hot chocolate and caramel corn until after you give the experience a whirl. If you aren’t familiar with how the tradition works, when I say “whirl” I mean that literally. Find yourself and your family a great spot under the tree and proceed to spin while gazing up at the myriad of spiraling lights above you. Do this for as long as you can stand and then allow yourself to lay on the soft grass below while looking up. The magic of the tree is the way the lights continue to spin while your feet lay still.
