Beall Woods State Park is located in southeastern Illinois on the banks of the Wabash River. The park consists of 635 acres, including a 15 acre lake that was built in the 1970s. Hikers come from near and far to view the 120 feet tall trees that are over 3 feet in diameter. This virgin timber is one of the few remaining tracts east of the Mississippi River.
While hiking on any one of the five trails, visitors will be able to take in the spectacular sight of the old growth forest and the many plants and wildflowers that grow here. Horses, pets and bicycles are prohibited on the trails. The easy hiking trails are the Tuliptree Trail, which is one mile long, the Sweet Gum Trail is half a mile long and the Schneck Trail is 1.75 miles long. Moderately easy trails are the Ridgeway Trail which is 1.75 miles long and the White Oak Trail is 1.25 miles long, however hikers will have to climb two flights of steps on this trail.
After hiking one of the trails, visitors can enjoy a picnic lunch at one of the picnic shelters. Playground areas and toilets are also available at the recreation area. If you choose to spend the night, there are 16 campsites located on the property as well as a group campground. Restrooms are available near the campsites, but there are no electricity hookups or showers.
Anglers visit the lake to catch catfish, largemouth bass and bluegill. During spring and fall trout season, the lake is stocked with trout.
The Beall Woods State Park is open all year from sunrise to 10:00 p.m. It is closed on Christmas and New Year’s Day.
