Help I’m Lonely

I was surrounded but felt all alone. My environment seemed strange even though it was familiar.

Adam felt the same. He had no recollection of how he got where he was or of growing into the man he observed. He just was. There was no one to ask for he was the only one like himself. There were no history books to consult because there was no history. He was history in the making.

Nothing was like him. Plants and animals abounded but they couldn’t talk. In fact, he had to name them before he could feel any affinity at all. He tried conversing with the sheep but only received a baa. He ran with the cheetah but only garnered a growl.

As Adam named the plants and animals in the Garden, he found no species like himself. God must have noticed Adam’s loneliness in his abundance. The Lord said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.” (NIV) Finally one he could talk to, experience life with and love.

I too have felt the loneliness bug. In the midst of an office filled with other people who talked to me, joked with me and treated me with respect, I felt alone. In the middle of a busy schedule, I became depressed. With happiness surrounding me, I cried.

Loneliness can strike even when we’re surrounded by busyness, stuff and people. Even when everything is in place that normally gauges happiness. But God determines it’s not good for us to be or feel alone.

God is as near to us as he was Adam. Adam perceived a reality that wasn’t. We may feel alone and that God and others have left, but he promises to never leave us. While it’s important to build friendships, the greatest friend we can have is Jesus Christ. Don’t spend so much time with the sheep that you miss the Shepherd.

Prayer: In our loneliness, Lord, remind us You are a friend that sticks closer than a brother. www.lovelinesfromgod.com and www.morningliteministry.com.
