Growing Snow Cone Rose Shrubs

Snow Cone Rose shrubs are an excellent choice to plant along fences and property lines. They provide adequate coverage as a screen plant and blossom once each year. While the shrub isn’t blooming, it offers fine textured foliage that is hardy and very winter tolerant. The flowers of the Snow cone Rose Shrub are not a fragrant as traditional roses, but offer a beautiful rose flower in a shrub plant. Snow Cone rose Shrubs should be planted in the spring for optimal results but fall planting is acceptable.

Prepare the soil in the area where the Snow Cone Rose shrubs will be planted. If the soil conditions are poor, a raised flower bed will be sufficient at obtaining adequate soil conditions. Mix one part peat moss with two parts garden soil and mix into the exiting soil. Use a roto tiller to break up the dirt and work the soil enhancer into the existing soil to a depth of 12 to 18 inches. Add a super phosphate fertilizer to the area and work into the soil Apply three pounds per 100 square feet of garden area. Spread the granules across the planting area and till into the soil.

Once the soil has been treated and enhanced to promote plant growth dig holes 12 inches deep with a spade shovel. Space the holes three feet apart for multiple plantings. Loosen any compacted soil around the hole with the shovel, setting the removed dirt aside.

Remove the shrub from the planting container carefully. Squeeze the container to loosen the soil and gently pull the shrub from the container. Prune any dead or damaged roots from the plant with a pair of sharp pruning shears. Place the entire snow cone rose shrub into a pail of warm water for two hours before planting to promote growth and reduce shock.

Mound a small amount of soil into the center of the hole. Position the roots of the shrub around the mound spreading the roots out to cover the bottom of the hole. Back-fill the hole with the removed soil. Ensure the bud union of the shrub is two inches below the soil.

Firm the soil around the base of the shrub with your hand. Water the area well, until the soil is moist but not soggy. Apply a layer of mulch two inches deep around the planting area to keep the soil from drying out and prevent weed growth. Once new growth has developed, apply one teaspoon of powdered fertilizer per plant. Spread the fertilizer around the base of the shrub and lightly mix it into the soil. Water well after fertilizing.
