Fun Preschool / Kindergarten Field Trip Ideas

Looking for field trip ideas for preschool students? Are you needing field trip suggestions for your home daycare? Searching for outings that coordinate with your preschool lesson plans? Below are a few fun field trips to think about.

Bakery

A local bakery might be thrilled to host your class for a quick field trip. Your students can see how donuts, pastries and other items are made. (Okay, so it is not the healthiest choice, but it’s fun!) Your students might even get a quick lesson in business management. Call owners of bakeries in your area to inquire if they’d be willing to provide a tour. Be sure that your students bring money to buy a treat when it is over.

Grocery Store

Many grocery stores are happy to host school groups for field trips. Your preschoolers will hear about how a grocery store runs, learn about stocking inventory and much more. They might even have a chance to see how meat is packaged. It is a very enlightening field trip.

Pharmacy

This one could coordinate with a grocery store field trip. Your students can learn about the job of a pharmacist, how pills are counted into bottles, drug safety and much more. Many locally owned pharmacies would be thrilled to cater to your preschool class for a field trip.

Fire Station

Most fire stations host field trip groups throughout the year. Your students will learn about fire safety, how a fire station runs, see a fire truck and much more. This field trip would be a very memorable experience for your preschool or kindergarten students.

Post Office

This field trip is great for teaching how the postal system works and the responsibilities of a mail carrier. Have your children write letters to their parents (or grandparents) before hand. They will probably have an opportunity to see their letters stamped and processed.

Paint-Your-Own-Pottery Spot

One creative idea is to take your students is a local art studio where they can paint a cup, plate or other item. Most cities and large towns have a paint-your-own pottery studio. Google your city’s name with “paint pottery” to find the nearest location.

For very young students, you could have them create hand print or footprint art. For suggestions, please read “Kids Footprint Art and Craft Ideas.”

Pet Store

Many pet stores are happy to have groups come for a visit. Your children will enjoy seeing the various animals such as snakes, lizards, fish, puppies etc. Ask the store manager if a staff member could answer questions from the kids. The kids might learn what some of the pets eat, where they came from, etc.

These are just a handful of field trip ideas for preschool and kindergarten students. Be sure to always send a thank-you note (and preferably a picture) to the location manager or owner. Field trips can help inspire your students, create lots of fun memories and provide a much-needed break from the classroom routine.
