Four Ideas for Your Next Family Night

In my home we live quite the busy life; I have a full time job that keeps me at work from 7am until 5pm. My wife is a fulltime mom raising our three children, two school aged and one who is not. Between my job, and the kid’s homework, recitals, fundraisers, to name a few there hardly seems to be time for us to just be a family. So for that reason we decided to have family night each and every Friday night. Here are some fun ideas that you can implement into your family if you wish.

My grandmother’s underpants: This is a fun game that really has no winners but the idea is to see who can remain in front of everyone the longest. Decide on who goes first and have them stand in front of the family. The idea is for those sitting on the couch to as any question they want. The one in front can only answer with “my grandmother’s underpants” without laughing, if they do they lose and someone else take center stage. Again there is no real winner but its loads of fun.

Singing sentences: This one is fun but can get really annoying if someone just can’t hold a tune. The object here is to sing everything you say during a particular event, such a dinner. Sometime for us this goes on for hours and then others 30 minutes is all we can take of being off pitch. There are no winners unless you decide to make up some rules, but just a silly way to spend some quality time with the family.

Game night: This one is self-explanatory but the difficult part here is choosing a game that everyone will want to play. So the point of this is to suggest a way to decide without upsetting anyone. What we do is write down the names of each game onto a piece of paper and place them into an old coffee can. Then each week someone different draws a game from the can and that’s what we play. The only exception to this rule is if we played the game drawn the week before.

Movie Night: Again self-explanatory, however here are some suggestions as to how to decide which movie to pick. What we normally do is pick two sets of movies out, one for the children and one for us adults. The children movies we all watch together as a family no matter how many times we have seen it. The object here is to simply spend time together on the couch as a family. The way we decide who will select a movie is by alternating from oldest to youngest each week.

The thing to remember here with whatever game or event you decide on is that is doesn’t really matter what it is as long as you do it together. I suggest making up some games of your own or searching the internet for family games and see what comes up.

Have fun!
