Farm & Barn Fest-Mokena, Illinois

Our local paper printed an advertisment for the Farm & Barn Fest in Monkena, Illinois so we decided to go and check it out. It was all day on a Saturday, so we went for awhile in the afternoon. Parking was great they had a great big field so there was no problem and we were close to the fest. When we got in they announced on a loud speaker that there was going to be a sheep shearing demonstration. The man explained how sheep were sheared a long time ago and how they do it now. He brought out some of the tools they used. Then he actually sheared a six month old lamb. It was really interesting if you have never seen it done before.
Then we started to walk around and the kids noticed a big blow up slide, face painting and some carnival games. I asked one of the workers and he said everything required tokens. I went to the token booth and was told they we 50 cents a piece. The tokens price for the slide were 6 token or $3.00 which I thought was a little pricey. Some of the other activities were a little high also. There were also a few games for one token. The ad in the paper never metioned how much everything was and I could see that this could end up costing a lot of money if you have a couple of kids.
I gave my kids $5.00 a piece and told them they could use it how they wanted. We ended up with face painting, played one game and fed the animals in the petting zoo. We also watched the pie eating contest which was a lot of fun. My kids didn’t want to participate because they don’t like pie, but they would have had fun it they just tried.
Overall I think the fest was cute but my kids said it was boring because they couldn’t play very many games or do the activities. Fests really shouldn’t nickle and dime parents with pricey games because it is the kids that lose out on fun and parents won’t come back next year. There should be a wristband price so the kids can play as many games that they want and the price should be advertised in the paper. Everyone would be happier, kids and parents. Then we would definitely be back next year.
